Synopsis

Lucy Prebble’s vibrant and compassionate exploration of love, science and the human psyche premiered at the National Theatre, London in 2012 and won Best New Play at the Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards.

Love at first dose. Connie and Tristan, volunteers at a new clinical trial, have palpable chemistry – hearts racing, minds reeling, knees buckling. But is it true love or a side effect of a new antidepressant still in development? Their sudden and illicit romance forces the supervising doctors to face off over the ethical consequences of their work.

What makes us who we are? The Effect delves into the mysteries of the human heart and brain and takes on our pill-popping culture with humour and scintillating drama.

“Funny and heartbreaking…constantly entertaining…”The Guardian

“…smashing…plays like a thriller…”New York Magazine

“…very clever—and ultimately more than clever…ingenious…”— The New York Times
