Synopsis
Set during 1940s wartime Britain, Philip King’s quintessentially English farce became an immediate success with audiences. The West End opening night was not without its perils: three German bombs were dropped near the theatre, but no-one stirred until the final curtain fell.
In the idyllic Merton-cum-Middlewick, the quirky villagers go about their daily lives with unwavering British resolve, all while the shadow of the Nazi threat looms. Meanwhile at the vicarage, Penelope Toop, the vicar’s wife, has a more burning issue to tackle.
When an old friend and former stage colleague drops in unannounced, the resident spinster Miss Skillon, a natural adversary of the flamboyant ex-actress, becomes convinced she’s caught the vicar’s wife in a scandalous affair. Determined to expose her, she unleashes a hilarious chain of mistaken identities and misunderstandings. Throw in a cheeky maid, an unsuspecting Bishop, an escaped German prisoner of war, and one extra vicar for good measure and delightful mayhem unfolds.
