Synopsis

Beginning is a sharp and astute two-hander that takes an intimate look at the first fragile moments of risking your heart and taking a chance. This tender and comic play about mutual loneliness and human connections received its world premiere to much critical acclaim at the National Theatre, London in 2017.

It’s the early hours of the morning and Danny’s the last remaining guest at Laura’s housewarming party. Laura is 38, single and childless; Danny is 42, divorced and has not seen his daughter for a number of years.

The play opens as a will-they-won’t-they romcom between two awkward strangers. But step by step, the two begin to share their fears and find a common ground of loneliness and broken dreams. Will this night be a new beginning for them?

“It’s quite simply, magnificent...never less than utterly refreshing...” – The Evening Standard

“Eldridge combines a hugely sympathetic sensibility with rare dramatic power.” – Daily Telegraph

“David Eldridge’s gorgeous new play is a wry, funny and touching meditation on loneliness in the era of the dating app and of fraudulent boasting on social media. Written with a real depth of insight, humour and compassion. *****” – The Independent,
