Steven Moffat (born 1961) is one of Britain’s most esteemed screenwriters. At the beginning of his career in the 1990s, he became known as a comedy writer, thanks to the TV series Coupling, Joking Apart and Press Gang.
In the 2000s, he became known for horror and adventure series and was the showrunner and head writer on Doctor Who for the BBC. His other works have included modernized TV versions of the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Sherlock (2009–2014). He also wrote the screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (2011).
In the 2020s, Moffat was the co-creator and co-writer of the TV series Dracula and the screenwriter of the series The Time Travellers’ Wife and Inside Man (2022) and Douglas is Cancelled (2024).
He has been nominated for over a 40 awards and wins have included the British Academy Television Awards (1991 and 2008) and the Royal Television Society Awards (1991), Bronze Rose of Montreux (1995), British Comedy Awards (2003), Hugo Award (2006, 2007, 2008 and 2011), Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (2007), BAFTA Cymry (2008), British Academy Television Craft Awards (2012), and Primetime Emmy Award (2016).
His play The Unfriend was due to have its world premiere at the Minerva Theatre at Chichester Festival Theatre in 2020, but due to the pandemic the premiere was postponed to May 26, 2022. The production was a success and the play transferred in January 2023 to Criterion Theatre and then in January 2024 to Wyndham’s Theatre in the West End.
