Charles Cusick Smith
Charles Cusick Smith was born in Glasgow, and studied at Glasgow School of Art and� Post Graduate at The Slade School of Art London. He has designed numerous productions in most theatres in the UK since 1982.
Internationally Charles has designed many Operas and Ballets including: Giselle at the English National Ballet; Romeo and Juliet, The Nutcracker, Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliachi and Giselle in Estonia; Nabucco, Aida, Don Carlos, The Wall, Otello, Der Rosenkavalier and Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliachi in Germany and Il Trovotore and Spartacus in Hong Kong.
European premieres include Follies, Pacific Overtures and Sweeney Todd (Best Production 1990 TMA) as well as the European premiere of Ladies Boyzone 1997 and Rock Around the Dock (Granada TV).
His Musical design credits in the UK include Dusty, Hot Stuff, Heavenly Bodies, West Side Story, Slice of Saturday Night, Chicago, Rock Hard, Hold Tight It’s 60’s Night, Company, In the Midnight Hour, The Guardsman and Cliff the Musical.
Recent productions include Wild East (Not the National Theatre Company 2006), Passing Places (Pitlochry Festival Theatre 2007), NBT Three Musketeers (2006) and The Nutcracker (2007).
Future projects include Sinbad the Sailor (Co-Design at York Theatre Royal, Dec 2007), Cinderella (at the Lyceum Sheffield, Dec 2007), Three Musketeers (Estonia, Oct 2008), Heartbreak House (Pitlochry Festival Theatre, July 2008) and The Nutcracker (Toulouse, Nov 2008).
Charles was twice awarded for his designs in the UK most notably the T.M.A. “Best Designer” 1993 and the Evening News Award “Best Designer” 1986.
