Muriel Pavlow

Mme de Rosemonde

Muriel was born in Lee in Kent. She made her theatrical debut at the King’s Theatre Glasgow in 1936 as one of the children in The Old Maid.

She first appeared on the London stage in the same year at the Covent Garden, playing the daughter of Oedipus in Oedipus Rex.

An extensive and highly successful theatrical career followed, seeing Muriel appear in over nine productions in as many years.

Muriel’s lengthy career in the cinema began even before her theatre debut. Her first film appearance, in 1936, was in A Romance in Flanders. Other early credits include Quiet Wedding, Night Boat to Dublin, The Shop at Sly Corner, It Started in Paradise and Malta Story.

Muriel became internationally famous in the mid 1950s after her starring role in Doctor in the House (opposite Dirk Bogarde) followed by Reach for the Sky, the story of legless fighter pilot Douglas Bader. She followed up her success in Doctor in the House with a sequel, Doctor at Large, in 1957. Much film and theatre work followed including stage productions at Windsor, Stratford and Guildford.

Muriel has never been off the stage or screen for long and she continues to work regularly. Television credits over the last decade include Memento Mori, Poirot, The Bill, The Final Cut, Black Books and Hotel. She recently completed an episode of Coupling due for transmission shortly.

When younger Muriel enjoyed riding, a passion for overseas travel has now taken over, and she has just returned from an extensive trip to Australia (where she had toured Odd Man In in 1961). She is particularly pleased to be working in the beautiful city of Vienna.
