Charles Cusick Smith
Charles has worked in the UK and internationally designing opera, ballet, drama, musicals and pantomime. His previous work for Northern Ballet includes set design for The Three Musketeers. He is resident designer with Library Theatre, Manchester. Charles has worked on many productions for Leicester Haymarket Theatre, most notably The Plough and the Stars.
Internationally Charles has designed ballets and operas including Giselle, English National Ballet; Romeo and Juliet, Nutcracker, Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci, Estonia; Romeo and Juliet, Indianapolis Ballet International; Nabucco, Aida, Don Carlos, The Wall (Rock Ballet), Otello, Der Rosenkavalier, Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci, Germany; Il Trovatore, Spartacus, Hong Kong.
He was awarded twice for his designs in the UK, most notably the Theatre Management of Great Britain, Best Designer in 1993 and the Evening News Award Best Designer, 1986. He has also exhibited his paintings in the Dragooni Galeri, Estonia, the Royal Academy, London and in many galleries in the UK.
Charles’ designs for Northern Ballet’s productions of The Nutcracker and The Three Musketeers were repeated in Slovenia and in Estonia. He recently co-designed Alice in Wonderland for Ballet du Capitole Toulouse and Pinocchio and 39 Steps for The Opera House Passau Germany.
Forth coming Productions are Co-Designs for York Theatre Royal Pantomime, Spamalot and Hello Dolly in Germany, and Little Shop of Horrors for Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
