John has performed extensively in major theatres throughout the United States and Canada, as well as Europe where he played Big Daddy in
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at The English Theatre-Frankfurt and Theater Basel, directed by Jonathan Fox. His
New York credits include
Is Life Worth Living? at The Mint Theater,
The Imaginary Invalid and
Marriage, both with the Pearl Theatre Company, as well as appearances with The York Theatre and John Houseman’s The Acting Company. His regional theatre performances include roles at Triad Stage (Orgon in
Tartuffe), The Guthrie Theater (
Amadeus for director Joe Dowling), The Shakespeare Theatre Company (the Free-for-All hit
The Taming of the Shrew, directed by David Muse, the Keith Baxter and Gillian Lynne production of
The Imaginary Invalid, Love’s Labour’s Lost for director Stephen Fried and Mary Zimmerman’s production of
Pericles), McCarter Theatre, The Kennedy Center, Great Lakes Theatre Festival, Cincinnati Playhouse, The Utah Shakespearean Festival, Alabama Shakespeare Festival (American premiere of Tom Stoppard and Andre Previn’s musical
Rough Crossing, directed by Martin Platt). He toured
North America in
The Sound of Music as Uncle Max opposite Marie Osmond, and as Santa Claus in
The Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular starring the Rockettes. He starred in Ken Hill’s operetta
Phantom of the Opera on its European tour to
Berlin,
Amsterdam, Bregenz,
Zurich and an extended engagement at
Paris’ Opera-Comique. As an author his new works include the comedies
Independence Day and
Lust/Realm Plays.
Also a director and a teacher, he staged Much Ado About Nothing last year for The Savage Rose Classical Theatre Company in Louisville, Kentucky.
