Leslie Sands was born and educated in Bradford and at the University of Leeds. Following his demobilisation in 1946 he began a lifelong career in the theatre by becoming an actor. He was subsequently involved in many capacities within the theatre and also television and film, working as an actor, scriptwriter and playwright.
His stage plays include the trio of riotous seaside comedies Basinful of the Briny, Beside the Seaside and Good Old Summertime, an adaptation of Emile Zola’s novel Therese Raquin, The Conscience of Sergeant Cluff and the very successful thrillers Something to Hide, Cat’s Cradle and Intent to Murder. As a writer for television, Leslie’s work ranges from a variety of individual plays to many episodes for major series such as Van der Valk and Z Cars.
