Joy trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Previous theatre work includes Helen Sutherland in The Pitmen Painters (West End and National tour), Vita Sackville West in Vita and Virginia (Sevenoaks Playhouse), Olwen Peel in Dangerous Corner, Philippa Haymes in A Murder Is Announced, and Lucy/Polly/Paula/Millie and Beryl in Confusions (All Theatre Royal, Windsor), Sheila in Dial M For Murder, Margaret in The Holly and the Ivy, and Catherine in Four Knights in Knaresborough (all National Tours), Minnie Savage in Pool Death (UK Premiere, Salisbury Playhouse), Mabel in An Ideal Husband (Vienna’s English Theatre), Dinah in Time and the Room (Gate Theatre), and The Boys From Syracuse (Harrogate).

Her television work includes three years as DC Kerry Holmes in The Bill, two series as Joanne Pearson in Peak Practice, WDC Crockett in the first series of The Thin Blue Line, and Lisa Jones in the second series of Band of Gold, Stella Mycroft in Dalziel and Pascoe – Underworld, Marie Jarvis in Heartbeat, Alison Blackshaw in The Government Inspector, Mrs Donoghue in The Lavender List, Lizzie in Free Agents, Clarissa in Hotel Babylon, Mrs Grey in MI High and Kay Smith in Doctors.
